Dr. Betsy Bender Stringam is the Associate Professor for Hotels and Resorts for the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management at New Mexico State University. She has also served as a faculty member for The University of South Carolina, Penn State University, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Prior to her career in academics Dr. Stringam worked in the hotel, resort, and restaurant industries at both the corporate and property level. Dr. Stringam received her Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration from Cornell University, her Master’s in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Florida International University, and her doctorate from Northern Arizona University.
Dr. Stringam is recognized by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association as a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE), and has been awarded the Harry E. and Carmen S. Varney Distinguished Professor of the Year Award. She is also a certified Higher Education Peer Reviewer and Publisher Reviewer for Quality Matters. Dr. Stringam recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning and is completing an additional Master’s Degree in Educational Technology.
Dr. Stringam conducts research primarily focused on hotels and resorts. Her work examines management strategies of hotels and resorts, the role of online user generated rating and review processes for hotels, loyalty and satisfaction of hotel and resort guests, and vacation ownership resorts. She has been the principle investigator on several grants for the International Foundation of the American Resort and Development Association. An educator by trade, some of her current education research focuses on Educational Technology and Online Teaching.
Dr. Stringam’s published research has appeared in International Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Administration, Hospitality Review, Journal of Quality Assurance in Hospitality and Tourism, Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology, Journal of Retail and Leisure Property, Electronic Consumer Research, Tourism Analysis, Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, and Hospitality & Tourism Educator. Her research has also been featured in several international hospitality industry publications including Lodging Consumer Insight, Notitur and Developments. Dr. Stringam currently serves as a contributing editor for several hospitality and tourism journals and is coauthoring the textbook A Profile of the Hospitality Industry.
Focused on the hotel and resort industries, Dr. Stringam is active in professional organizations as a member of the Research Committee and Education Committees for the International Foundation of the American Resort Development Association, a member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, a member of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education and as a Research Affiliate of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Industry Studies Program. She has served previously as a member of the Hospitality Association for the State of South Carolina, and the Broadband Working Group for New Mexico First.
